What are "flat shoes"?

I have been advised not to use flat shoes due to plantar fasciitis (a type of foot pain ). Can anybody explain me what are "flat shoes"? How to identify such shoes when I go to buy one? I have no idea about what makes a pair of shoes fit/unfit for running. I only look for softness in the bottom part. If the portion where foot rests is soft, I assume that would be a good running shoe. The softer the better. Is this correct? If not then please explain. Also what is meant by shoe with arch support and how do I test that for a pair of shoes?

Could anyone recommend some MA shoes which would be good for someone with chronic plantaar fasciitis?

(basically it has to have a moderate amount of built-in arch support, or the ability to remove the insole so I can insert my own custom-made orthotic.)

How do I fix the pain in my foot?

My foot has been hurting for about 8 months now. Half way though the day my foot always hurts in the middle of the arch. When I walk it feels like there’s something pulling in my foot or something pushing out of my foot. Then when I go and check nothing is wrong. My dad keeps on trying new things but doesn’t want to go to the doctor. We have tried icing it after every athletic event and I have been wearing Dr.Schools liquid jells in my shoes but those don’t seem to be working. We are thinking of getting arch support orthotics but is there anything I can do in the mean time.

PS: I think I hurt it by tying an ankle brace to tight.
Can I have an answer from a person that is not biased?

    Foor support and health?

I have a job where I stand all day for nine hours at a time. Every day I feel like my feet are on fire. In the morning, I wake up and put my feet on the floor and it is like needles are being stuck into my heels and arches, but I get up and work through it. Even my shins have started to hurt. Finally a friend of mine (while over for drinks on my day off) noticed my limping, looked at my bare feet, and asked if I had flat feet. I said I did not, but she mentioned that my feet looked swollen and as though I had no arch at all. She recommended getting support for my feet, FAST, and taking better care of them as it may lead to problems down the road.
I have purchased some Dr. Scholl’s Tri-Comfort Orthotics for heel and arch support, and want to know if that is a good step in the right direction? Also, as I know nothing of foot support or problems, I want to know what else I can do to help them. How tight do I tie my shoes? Should I do more? How do I care for them when I’m on them all day?
I meant FOOT not "foor".. darned submit button! :D

    Troubles with flat-feet?

I have flat-feet and wear the Asics Gel-1110 shoes.
They said they would help a little for over-pronating and would deliver support, but my feet hurt like crazy.
I have arch pains whenever I run miles.
I tried to buy arch support orthotics, but they even
made my arch pains 5x worse.
I don’t know if my flat-feet are one of a kind
because those arch supports should have helped.
Can anyone help me on shoe selections or give me any suggestions for insoles?

Is there any literature regarding the long term benefits of wearing orthotics for flat feet?

I’ve googled and yahood, I’m assuming I just am not looking in the right place. The majority of information I’ve found mentions using arch support in your shoes, however I am a martial artist/gymnast and the majority of what I do involves me not wearing shoes. Will wearing the arch supports when I have shoes on actually benefit me during the times I am not wearing the supports? Thanks in advance.

What is the best place to look for arch support wedges?

I’m looking for arch support wedges and need to know who sells them. I don’t need an entire footbed or custom orthotics, just the wedges that can be taped under the arch of an existing footbed. I use Superfeet but the arch isn’t enough. Other over the counter footbeds tend to be too soft which negates the entire "support" idea. I have one set of wedges that my physical therapist put in my current running shoes. I now want to put them in my other daily shoes as they feel great!

Flat Feet Problem — visit a podiatrist or visit a popular private orthotics store?

I have flat feet and am in need of arch support/orthotics. I was also told by my chiropractor that I need a heel raise because one leg is about 1/2" shorter than the other.

There are a lot of popular private/custom orthotic stores in my area, such as GoodFeet and others.

Is it going to be better to have medical orthotics made by a podiatrist or made by one of these type of stores?

Which is more comfortable and actually works better?

10-15 years ago I had orthotics made that I obtained through a podiatrist but they were very uncomfortable. I had better luck with stores like Good Feet many years later, but I’m wondering as I get older and my issues are increasing (such as major back pain and misalignment of the spine), who I should go to.

    Have podiatrist obtained orthotics improved?

Comfortable yet stylish shoes with good arch support for a teen?

I have flat feet and I have to wear orthotics but they don’t always help my feet. My feet are still flat and it hurts to wear basically any shoe that doesn’t have my orthotics.
I also have PE this year as one of my classes so I need some good running shoes or athletic shoes that are cute yet comfortable with good arch support.
    Can anyone help me??
(I’m not sure if I put this in the right section so excuse me if you think I didn’t.)

Should I get Orthotic shoes and insoles or simply buy the right type of shoe and insoles for my feet?

I have flexible flat feet and i over pronate a lot. After doing cross country, my arch, knees, shin and ankles hurt quite a bit. My right foot arch is in pain.

Should I simply buy running shoes made for flat feet( Asics Evolution 5 are the ones I’m thinking about and Dr.Scholl’s Arch Support or Knee Pain), or should I go to a foot doctor and get specialized orthotics?

    Thanks.
